Local Flavor

Although it would be inaccurate to strictly categorize by geographic region, malts within a district do tend to share some characteristics. The combinations of local soil, the peat that feuls malting fires and water sources impart some commonalities to each distilleries' products.

Click on on a region of the image map at right for a few of that area's different distilleries and a purely subjective description of the malts' characteristics. This list is by no means complete, especially in the case of Speyside, the district around the River Spey that boasts nearly half of all Scotland's distilleries.
